BBC Radio 2:
Lights On!
Something very special indeed to close the show for this year's Festival In A Day. We're delighted to have Jeff Lynne's legendary ELO performing on a festival stage for the first time in 28 years.
Formed in Birmingham in 1970, the Electric Light Orchestra went on to become one of the most successful bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
An extraordinary run of 26 UK top 40 singles made Jeff Lynne's anthemic ELO songs some of the most recognisable of the last forty years.
Jeff went on to work with many of his musical heroes including Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, the Everley Brothers and his Traveling Wilburys bandmates Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison.
Talking about his Festival In A Day performance, Jeff said: “I haven’t performed live in quite some time, and I know the fans have asked for it a lot over the years. It’s very exciting to come to Hyde Park with Radio 2 and do something this big, and I’m very much looking forward to playing my ELO songs for everyone.”
For this unique performance, Jeff and ELO will be accompanied by the famously versatile BBC Concert Orchestra. We can't think of a more exciting finale to this year's event!

"Jeff Lynne’s ELO Takes London’s Hyde Park by Storm! Tell Tchaikovsky the News!"
The Guardian: "Radio 2’s annual one-day music festival showcases some great past and present acts, but the symphonic pop songs of Jeff Lynne’s ELO trump them all. 5 out of 5"
The Times: "As the compere Chris Evans reminded the 50,000-strong crowd at Radio 2’s annual festival, ELO last played a full concert 28 years ago. If this one went well, their leader Jeff Lynne had revealed, a tour could be on the cards. Fortunately for the fervent, mostly middle-aged fans who sold out this show months ago and the millions more watching on TV who had given up hope of seeing the biggest live band of the late Seventies on stage again the 80-minute headline performance was near perfect. 5 out of 5"

PERSONAL REVIEW:
THE ELO CONCERT, SEPTEMBER 14: WATCH THE GREAT COME BACK OF JEFF LYNNE/ELO FOLLOWING THE WISH OF THE PEOPLE :-)
I had shivers when watching this broadcast of Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra play live in Hyde Park, September 14, for example when they played the last number “Roll over Beethoven” and Jeff was rocking on his guitar while the 50,000 people of the crowd were dancing and Richard Tandy was hitting the notes perfectly on the piano together with a great playing band – even though I had liked to see the original line up “coming back” – and also the BBC concert orchestra, which I liked very much to see and hear (but I missed the Gareth Malone Voices Choir at the parts of the music requiring a beautiful choir to bring ALL of the original ELO experience, for example the end of Mr. Blue Sky), a beautiful LIGHT SHOW including the Spaceship of ELO (symbolising the Source), the skyline of London around Hyde Park and not least, I was happy to see Jeff’s great happiness to perform and his surprise when seeing 50,000 happy people warmly welcoming and reaching out for him, and yes, I truly like Jeff’s humour and kindness very much, I almost feel that I know “him” :-).
Jeff/ELO did a few shows in 2001 after the Zoom album, but else we have to go back to 1986 since he did some live concerts, and all the way back to 1982 since I saw “the good old ELO” live in Copenhagen on the Time-tour, and TIME it is for “a great comeback”, my friends :-).
So this was truly a HISTORIC show when Jeff returned in brilliant style following a request from BBC and the people saying “we want you back”, and he did as the people required from him, "I'm back". THANK YOU, Jeff, Richard & Co. for an almost perfect show – I love to see you in Copenhagen and follow you on your coming World Tour :-).
Later: A TRULY MARVELOUS AND STUNNING PERFORMANCE
I finished doing the last details to my website this afternoon, and watched the whole concert for the first time hereafter, and this is when I really started to appreciate it with my fullest, and yes, listen to SHOWDOWN as example as one of the highlights, and yes the BBC Orchestra is simply FANTASTIC, and together with the amazing ELO-arrangements they do the whole difference to me, live strings are simply magical, Jeff, and yes, the violin solo at the beginning of Livin’ Thing is so beautiful that it can make one cry, and again also in Sweet Talking Woman as another highlight, this is what dreams are made of, this is the absolutely finest music that I know of, and yes, we know Stig, it is in a class of itself, and Stepin’ out is so beautiful that it almost makes me cry (again), Jim (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_lYFhFHVQM).
This is a truly MARVELOUS performance, Jeff and the band are nailing it, they bring new and FRESH life to these old songs that have never sounded better than now, and yes, the band and the songs are sounding nothing less than THE MOST WONDERFUL I have heard, I love the drummer, also the two chorus singers, and yes yes yes, all of the band for their happiness and skills when playing, and watch the Spaceship flying freely behind Jeff in Livin’ Thing, isn’t it just incredible, and yes, the whole thing, you know :-) :-) :-).
http://stigdragholm.wordpress.com/2014/09/15/september-2014-vi-the-end-putin-was-my-new-self-we-will-now-bring-out-and-become-the-corpus-christi-as-one-which-we-could-not-do-individually/
Days later: Music is (was) my life and this concert is by far the best I have ever seen, even though I was not present and have only watched it on video, and in this sense you may say that this very concert was the greatest experience of my (old) life, and it was used to LIFT ME UP to become my new self as the Source (“the spaceship of everything” containing all life/creation including the force of the Source, which is what the ELO spaceship symbolizes) by bringing the deepest feelings inside of me when watching it, and furthermore this may be my favourite song of Jeff’s and certainly it is the most symbolic to me to lift me up and “finish what I started” (my whole mission), and when writing this, I remember how my LTO friends in Kenya used to LOVE this song VERY MUCH, and when I played it to Elijah’s small children, they could not help dancing and smiling all over their faces, which is really what TRUE life is all about, to bring you eternal JOY and HAPPINESS without sufferings, and this is what is coming now when I will open the eyes of my new self :-) :-) :-).
"LIFT ME UP": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kly8Wu-MlQc
Update October 20, 2014: I uploaded the new 720p HQ version (after a re-run on BBC that a kind man recorded and uploaded to YouTube from where I have it) and watched the concert again having tears in my eyes all the way through because, as I thought, this is how ELO was supposed to sound and look like all along as I have had in my mind since I was a boy, and I told myself that this is indeed the finest songs of all that I know of – despite of what I write about other music that I also love – and I could have included Mr. Blue Sky or another great ELO-song as “the best song ever” on my list, the ending of Mr. Blue Sky is the most incredible of all songs still giving me a VERY BIG lump in my throat with massive tears pressuring on when I am now hearing/seeing it again, but I did not, this honour goes to David Bowie with “Heroes” :-).
ELO is and has been number 1 on my Top 100 list of favourite artists since 1978 as you can see and listen to on Spotify here and "Out of the Blue" is number 1 on my Top 100 list of favourite albums, which also could have been "Time" or "Armchair Theatre", as you can see and listen to here.

7. ELO - Zoom tour live 2001
Electric Light Orchestra took rock in a new direction, combining lush orchestrations with a pop sensibility, rapidly scoring 17 Top 40 hits. After a lengthy absence from U.S. stages, ELO, headed by Jeff Lynne, returns in this much-anticipated performance kicking off the new "Zoom" album at CBS Television City in Los Angeles with all of the lavish spectacle the band is famous for in this state-of-the-art concert. Songs: Do Ya, Evil Woman, Showdown, Strange Magic, Livin' Thing, Alright, Lonesome Lullaby, Telephone Line, Turn To Stone, Just For Love, Easy Money, Mr. Blue Sky, Ma-Ma-Ma Belle, One Summer Dream, Tightrope, State Of Mind, Can't Get It Out Of My Head, Moment In Paradise, 10538 Overture, Ordinary Dream, Shine A Little Love, Don't Bring Me Down, Roll Over Beethoven. 9. ELO - Discovery video album 1979
Discovery is a music video album by the Electric Light Orchestra. Recorded in 1979 shortly after the completion of the Discovery studio album. The track listing is identical to the studio LP; each of the album's songs has its own corresponding promotional video. It received TV airings on The Blue Jean Network in 1980 among others, with releases on VHS in 1979, then later on the "Out of the Blue Tour" Live at Wembley/Discovery 1998 DVD/VHS. The video album was produced because Jeff Lynne refused to go on tour to promote the album as was customary but instead presented it in the relatively new video format. This helped launch the nascent long-form music video market. The song's videos marked the last appearance for the band's string players.
10. ELO - Out Of The Blue Tour, Live at Wembley 1978
The famous concert from 1978 including the opening of the spaceship at Wembley, which I watched on Danish TV, and ever since I have been hooked on the classics of ELO :-).

Formed after the break up of The Move in 1970 they pioneered the integration of orchestral instruments into pop music and released a series of groundbreaking and increasingly successful albums through the seventies that culminated in the multi-million selling Out Of The Blue. This concert is from the world tour for that album and was filmed at Londons Wembley Arena in 1978.

Subject: JEFF LYNNE'S ELO THE BEST LIVE BAND IN THE WORLD
Subject: JEFF LYNNE'S ELO THE BEST LIVE BAND IN THE WORLD
The great Jeff Lynne has a new album out since November 1st, 2019 which was no.1 in the UK last November. Jeff Lynne's ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA is still Touring! From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world. 50 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas and Stadiums. I saw them again in the Summer of 2019 on the North American Tour...( Best Concert of my life) All the reviews agree they are the best live act in the world and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius. They are in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Song Writer award ( ASCAP ) 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, and so many others... Long live Jeff Lynne’s ELO! Please Tour in 2022-2023.
